The snow is falling this morning. It started yesterday afternoon with some light, dancing flurries. Their party lasted through the night and this morning the music still plays and their fluttery flurry is gracefully falling to the ground.
There will be no accumulation today, at least not anything susbtantial. But the flakes still fall, crisscrossing in a minute but cosmic flurish of grace. The snow reminds my of the grace that falls on life, the grace that flows over humanity, the grace that sustains the world.
As I fighting through the traffic of metro Detroit this morning, a little grace began to play in my ears as well. Bono began to sing:
"Grace, she takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name
Grace...
It's a name for a girl
It's also a thought that, changed the world
And when she walks on the street
You can hear the strings
Grace finds goodness in everything
Grace, she's got the walk
Not on a ramp or on chalk
She's got the time to talk
She travels outside of karma, karma
She travels outside... of karma
When she goes to work, you can hear the strings
Grace finds beauty in everything
Grace...
She carries a world on her hips
No champagne flute for her lips
No twirls or skips between her fingertips
She carries a pearl in perfect condition
What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings...
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things
Grace finds beauty in everything"
("Grace," from U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind)
May God grant us the eyes to behold grace today.

What a great song! (Or at least great words. I've never heard the music) I like the line "she travels outside of karma". Grace has nothing to do with the actions of the recipient, so karma isn't involved. Yet it's so easy to think it is....
Yes, I love that line too. I love the way Bono allows the Christian narrative to stand beside and counter other narratives, transforming our expectations as the unexpected gift of God crashes into the midst of our world and draws all things into Christ (Eph. 1:3-14).
