Thought for the Day from Eugene Peterson

"The cultivation of consumer spirituality is the antithesis of a sacrificial, "deny yourself" congregation. A consumer church is an antichrist church."

From the lecture "Spiritual Formation Is Not an Option." You can hear the whole lecture by clicking here.

Peterson does some wonderful stuff. Of course, he is most famous in popular evangelical circles for his translation (not paraphrase) The Message.

I love his Contemplative Pastor. I just picked up the first two volumes of a planned five volume "spiritual theology". They are called Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places: A Conversation in Spiritual Theology and Eat This Book: A Conversation in Spiritual Reading.

I would recommend listening to the mp3 of the lecture from which this quote was plucked. It was pretty good.

Grace, erm
