Yesterday we had our first time of engaging material in Pauline Letters 1 at Rochester College. I have 36 students in the class, so it is going to be an interesting semester of discussion and class interaction.
Yesterday, as I was getting into the lecture portion of our class time, one of our notoriously contentious students raised his hand to interrupt the flow of lecture and gripe about the assigned reading for the day. Before the first sentence had left his mouth, three other students had a hand in the air to, well, put him in his place. It was really quite an interesting scene.
More comedic than that, however, was one of the reading responses that was submitted at the end of class. The student begins...
To be honest, I felt that this reading was a load of crap. Sampley uses a lot of unneeded big words to describe what Paul says. I felt that I was reading 3 books at the same time. The Sampley book, the Bible references, and the dictionary! Honestly, who uses the word "jettison" in common conversation.
For the next two paragraphs, the student does attempt to engage in dialogue with Sampley, but the real kicker was scribbled in purple ink at the bottom of the page. Sometime during my lecture, the author wrote: "P.S. I apologize for my opening paragraph since you used the word 'jettison' in your lecture today. : )"
I happened to read this one while chatting with Natalie about the responses during dinner last night. I lost it. It just really cracked me up. I guess I have to come face to face with the reality that I am the guy who would "(use) the word 'jettison' in common conversation."
