"The Rock Stars of Sweat"

Tomorrow the world stops. At 18:00 GMT, a whistle will blow, a leather ball will be tapped on a feathery green pitch, and the World Cup will have begun. (And I don't have cable to watch all of the games on ESPN & ESPN2!)

I have been tooling around an unusual source to feed my football/futbol frenzy: National Public Radio. I confess, I have a sick addiction to NPR. I listen to it in the car. Periodically I can be caught with the live stream blaring out of my office. I even go back and relisten to some of the more powerful pieces time and time again. It is better news than I find on CNN or, especially the extremely unfair and off-balance, Fox News.

You can find all of NPR's Cup coverage here. There you will find brilliant pieces like "Counterinng Racism with World Cup Goodwill" and "Hooligans No More: [John] Cleese's World Cup Decorum". And you really have to listen to the little piece by Frank Deford, long time critic of the world's football, called "The Rock Stars of Sweat." It is a great little piece that looks at the global pandemic of football fever and considers the implications of a US win on diplomacy on the world stage.

I have a lot of work breathing down my neck for the next month. Unfortunately, I will be worthless, glued to the BBC's play by play (with all of its brilliant British pomp!) and ESPN Soccernet's game ticker.

The Czechs are banged up. The Italians are steeped in scandal.
We're going to play Brazil in the second round, and we're going to beat them.

Behold the power of Betsy Baker! After her advent, Vandy goes on a tear, and her magic will lift the Yanks to enrage the entire globe. I can't wait.
